Infection Signs and Symptoms

So how do you know if you an infection after your pacemaker has been implanted?
  • Feeling bad overall
  • Fever
  • Chills and shakes
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Drainage
  • Pain and tenderness
Infection usually occurs about five to ten days after the procedure. But pacemaker infections can show up as much as a year or two after the last time any surgical procedure was done on the wound. When you have a mechanical device in your body, bacteria are able to hide in the nooks and crannies of the device. The white cells of the immune system can’t get in there and fight off the infection, as with a normal process, and this allows the infection to slowly molder and simmer. The bacteria begin to grow and cause a clinical infection. Source: http://www.muschealth.com/multimedia/Podcasts/transcription.aspx?podid=662
